Transitional Year

Clinical Education

The program has been designed to provide a diversified core curriculum which allows the resident to learn responsibility for the primary management of patients with a wide variety of pathological conditions.

The Transitional Year Curriculum requires 28 weeks of training in disciplines which provide fundamental clinical skills. Recognizing that individuals entering the program may desire exposure to areas not included in the core curriculum, the program offers elective rotations, which are tailored to meet the individual clinical needs and future interests of each resident.  See Curriculum & Specialty tracks below.

Residents assume the same responsibilities as categorical residents on respective services. Transitional residents are required to participate fully in the departmental conferences and teaching activities for each service on which they rotate. Faculty and senior residents provide supervision and teaching for the transitional residents.

The GME Research Department has developed several tools and resources that will help residents and fellows develop ideas into manageable and realistic research projects. We have found that using these resources saves time and energy while avoiding typical pitfalls and dead ends. For example, the research project outline facilitates the translation of a good idea into a research project, provides the bulk of the narrative portion of IRB application, and serves as the guide for implementing the project.

The GME Research Department provides support to Spectrum Health residents and faculty in all areas of research and scholarly activity (e.g., quality, educational, surveys).  To access more details, including templates (e.g., study protocol, poster), help request forms and other contact information, visit Spectrum Health GME Research.
