Why I chose this program/Grand Rapids for my training

I chose the surgery program at Spectrum Health because the interactions I have had with the surgical faculty and residents. The attending surgeons are excellent and are very eager to teach. There is a culture of excellence that permeates throughout the program; one that I want to be a part of. The program is also actively involved in research. The program director not only encourages surgical trainees to participate in research opportunities, but provides adequate resources and support to expedite an assortment of projects.

Residents here feel comfortable going both straight into practice in a rural or urban area or into fellowship. I appreciated the acceptance and encouragement here of following whichever path you choose. In addition, it was clear to me during my interview and the dinner that the residents truly enjoyed their program and each other. After being here for 3 years, I can confirm that is the case. Grand Rapids is a good place to live, with a good combination of culture, nature, and a variety of residency training settings.
