Why I chose this program/Grand Rapids for my training

I chose Grand Rapids because it was a perfect blend of my professional and personal interests. The residents were the most sincere and friendly that I met on the interview trail, and they have stellar ultrasound and addiction medicine faculty. On top of all that, Grand Rapids is a fantastic place to live, and I feel really lucky to have matched here.

Why I chose this program/Grand Rapids for my training

I really wanted a program that would train me to be the best emergency physician possible; and Spectrum Health easily convinced me they were the program to do it through clinical curriculum, active education, high volume/high acuity patients, and awesome faculty educators!

There is also a very real “family-feel” to everyone I’ve met in this program. The residents and faculty I met during interviews were very personable and down-to-earth. They seemed to really take an interest in me as a person rather than a resume.

Hobbies/what I do outside of work

Why I chose this program/Grand Rapids for my training

I chose Grand Rapids because it offers a great balance between working and living. It's a city in which there is plenty to do and see whilst still having a certain small town feel. The beach is only a short drive away so there's also a nice mix of the urban and the outdoors. What attracted me most to the residency program is the opportunity to work in both an adult and pediatric tertiary emergency department right the way through my training.

Hobbies/what I do outside of work

I love dancing, particularly swing and salsa. I also enjoy watching and playing most sports; rugby and soccer in particular as well as playing guitar, reading and travelling.

Why I chose this program/Grand Rapids for my training

I am from Grand Rapids, and as I get older, I just keep falling more and more in love with not only downtown Grand Rapids, but also the Lakeshore. That, combined with the proximity to family, made Grand Rapids an easy choice for training.

The program at Spectrum Health is unique in the fact that it has a very high volume ER, is a level 1 trauma center and has an attached children’s hospital, yet still has a personal and even family feel due to the fact that the attending physicians not only see themselves as care providers but also as teachers. I was also very impressed by the strong ultrasound training that the program offers, as well as access to cutting edge equipment and treatments.

Hobbies/what I do outside of work

I have a 4-year-old daughter, who is my best friend. We enjoy going on hikes, practicing yoga, spending time at our cottage on Lake Michigan, seeing the animals at Boulder Ridge Zoo and Critter Barn, and cooking vegetarian meals. I was extremely impressed by this program on interview day. The current residents seemed happy and very satisfied with their training, and alumni I spoke to enthusiastically touted the program's strengths. I loved the emphasis on ultrasound early in training, as well as the integrated pediatrics shifts. Also, this is an older program with a deep network that will help me practice wherever I want upon graduation.
Additionally, my wife and I both felt that Grand Rapids would be an amazing place to raise our young family. Western Michigan is a hidden gem!

After completing my undergraduate and medical school education in the area, I simply found it difficult to want to leave Grand Rapids! Grand Rapids is a city of tremendous growth made up of great health care systems, awesome breweries with plenty of local dining options, and a great escape to the outdoors just minutes away. In addition, I found that the program here has many like-minded individuals who value family, are outdoor enthusiasts and are also dedicated to the profession of Emergency Medicine. Moreover, the faculty and the educators are continuously challenging you to become a better provider all while providing an encouraging and supportive environment to train. West Michigan is truly the perfect balance and the best of all worlds for a residency program!

Why I chose this program/Grand Rapids for my training

Since I left Grand Rapids over 8 years ago, the city and the population have grown immensely. With that came a surge in healthcare infrastructure and an increase in the diversity of the patient population. With a high ED volume, a strong academic drive, and a premiere healthcare system in a medium-sized city, I was drawn back home. I have pride for the city I grew up in and for what it is today, and I am excited to learn and practice in this type of ED environment. Furthermore, Grand Rapids is a beautiful city with a rich food and beer culture, excellent sports teams, and a family-friendly attitude. Speaking of sports teams, 4 Red Wings players visited Devos Chidren's Hospital while on my away elective there. Besides being star-struck, I was hooked.

Hobbies/what I do outside of work

I enjoy ice hockey, weight lifting, football, baseball; essentially, any and all sports. I love hiking, fishing, and camping as well. Why I chose this program/Grand Rapids for my training

I am from Grand Rapids and know what this city has to offer. 15-20 years ago Grand Rapids was an aging furniture city, and I never went downtown. We have many generous philanthropists in the area (Van Andel, Meijer, Secchia) who have invested in the city. Grand Rapids is now a hopping city. It is Beer City USA! There are so many great restaurants, I don't know the last time I went to a chain restaurant. There is so much to do in the city, and the beautiful lake shore is only 35 minutes from the hospital. Traffic is essentially non existent, I grew up in the country with my closest neighbor a half mile away, and it only took 15 minutes to get to the hospital. Most importantly I choose to do residency here because of how great of an organization Spectrum Health is. Their facilities are top notch. Every interview I went on I was always comparing everything back to my home institution; and I realized how nice I had it as a medical student. The catchment area is basically west of Lansing and almost the entire lake shore. I chose spectrum for the breadth of pathology that you see on a daily basis. Liver transplant patients are probably the only patients that we would transfer to UofM, because we do not do that (yet?) To summarize: great location, great facilities, great acuity (level 1 trauma center), great teachers, great variety of patients, great place to learn emergency medicine
